Matin Zad x Levi's Made & Crafted

6/23/2013

Comments

Matin Zad collaborated with Levi's Made & Crafted for a special photo project to show off their latest collections within the context of fine art, fashion and still life.

"Inspired by the interiors of Tokyo-based architectural firm SANAA, we wanted to recontextualize Levi’s Made and Crafted denim while paying homage to the brand’s roots. The idea of gardening and botany was born out of the value in beautifying one’s work environment, contrasting the rugged nature of the clothes with its delicate shapes and vibrant colors.
The images also speak of the likeness between the care and delicacy of tending to a garden, to the construction of the Levi’s work wear, a longstanding work uniform for many gardeners and farmers."

Eve Arnold

“If a photographer cares about the people before the lens and is compassionate, much is given. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument. ”

Eve Arnold (April 21, 1912-January 4, 2012) was a photojournalist who started her career in 1946, she developed most of her skills from Harper's Bazaar art director, Alexey Brodovitch. She was based in the US during the 1950's but moved to the UK in 1962. During a six year interval she worked in China and the US but lived in the UK for the rest of her life. Her most memorable work was her images of Marilyn Monroe on the set of The Misfits (1961). Arnold captured many icons such as Joan Crawford, Malcolm X, Marlene Dietrich and Queen Elizabeth II. She had also traveled quite extensively and visited countries such as South Africa, Russia and Afghanistan. What I particularly love about her was that she never limited herself, she was versatile, not only did she  photograph icons or well known political figures, she ventured out into poor countries, places that were destitute and gave us a glimpse into the lives of the underprivileged or oppressed. She never saw a divide between the two; "I don't see anybody as either ordinary or extraordinary,I see them simply as people in front of my lens.”

I randomly selected my favourite images which include icons and Harlem Fashion that she shot in 1950. To view more of her work go here, here and here.

Comments

Mary Katrantzou used images of postcards from around the globe for her latest resort 2014 collection. From the Swiss Alps, high rise apartment buildings in Sao Paulo, an Italian vineyard, a Japanese bridge and French flower fields, one can only expect a jaw dropping collection from the print master.

Kelly Reemtsen

6/16/2013

Comments

“Kelly Reemtsen’s paintings explore the paradoxical state of being female in post-feminist contemporary society” Lia Skidmore.

I recently discovered Kelly Reemtsen's work via Skidmore Contemporary Art. One of the reasons why her paintings appealed to me is because of the contrast between the feminine form which is  accentuated by the vintage dresses and the masculine tools which give an element of female empowerment. Reemtsen says the paintings of the women falling are to symbolise the idea of "falling out of love and/or falling short of expectations." I really enjoyed reading Lia Skidmore's biography of the painter and if you're as enthralled by this as much as I was, read more here.
