Hello. My name is Nicole. I’m 21 years old and I’m the editor of Vintage Lifestyle magazine, South Africa’s first vintage magazine. I also have a blog called Diamonds & Dust.
What are you reading at the moment?
I’m reading a lot of J.D Robb and Deon Meyer novels. It brings out the inner detective in me ;)
Who is your style icon?
I have too many. My grandmother, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Ulyana Sergeenko, Franciose Hardy and Grace Kelly. They all have a unique sense of style and I look up to them for fashion inspiration.
Although, I’ve always said I admire people who dress completely different to what I do. They inspire me to try new things.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Apart from being married and having children, I see myself running the biggest vintage fashion magazine in the world. I know all of this comes with a lot of responsibility, but I couldn’t be more excited.
Who / What inspires you?
My family. Cliché, I know, but they are the ones that show me that having faith in everything that I do is key. They support me no matter what.
Everything about Starlings Café inspires me. This is where I sat thinking up the very first issue of Vintage Lifestyle. It’s so great to absorb the ambience that Trish (owner) has created but also to enjoy the best flat white/Assam tea in the world.
People and fashion inspire me too. I love reading fashion blogs from all over the world.
What cannot you live without?
A sense of humour.
A source of caffeine.
Autumn/Winter must haves?
Wedge boots, tote bags, statement necklaces, big rings, long skirts, leather gloves and vintage blazers. Colour wise I love burgundy, navy blue, emerald green, yellow and plum purple. I am mildly obsessed with patterns. I love floral and black polka dots (see Stella McCartney Fall 2011 collection).
What staple item/s of clothing do you think every woman should have in her closet?
A pair of mega black heels, a black/navy blue blazer, a white/black dress, a set of pearl earrings and a classic tote bag.
What’s on your i-pod at the moment?
I’m currently listening to The Strokes, The Kooks, Foster the People, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, The Cardigans, Ladyhawke, Garbage, I Blame Coco, Kasabian, The Beatles, The Plastics. I really enjoy listening to great music.
Any advice or tips you’d like to share with us?
Have faith in what you do. I love this quote by Estee Lauder: “I didn’t get to where I am by thinking about it and dreaming about it. I got there by doing it.”
